What effect do winglets have on the lift and/or general flight of a glider plane?

Strictly from memory, I remember that air on top of the wing moves towards the tip (end), while air underneath moves towards the root (by the fuselage). The winglets help to keep the air on top of the wing from moving off the end, and creating a vortex with the air moving in the other direction underneath the wing. They try to stop the vorticies since they cost the plane energy. For a glider, this means the plane can travel further on the same amount of altitude.
