If you obtain a Private Pilots license, can you pilot both helicopters and smallaircraft?

First answer, Will have to make a choice between the two or can I do both? If I can do both, how will a helicopter flight view my flight experience in the fixe wing air craft? Will I have to go through the same initial training such as ground school?
